My Three Loves
I’ve been in love; at least three times;
perhaps, a great many more;
I think of each of them, ofttimes;
every one; I still adore.
Each one happened at a different time;
I was always faithful to each;
nothing ever came about by design;
and all had lessons to teach.
I can only hope that they loved me;
but, now I never will know;
their love made me; who I was to be;
they taught me, love can grow.
Two of them; once became my wife;
in the first; her love ran its course;
facing considerable hardship and strife;
eventually ending in divorce.
I felt the horrible sting of her rejection;
and separation from each son;
loneliness drove me to seek affection;
dreading what life had become.
My second wife would become my last;
spending nearly four decades together;
our season had come; and now had passed;
her death ended our love, forever.
Now, I find myself, living all alone;
my future is set; and decided;
God shall soon be calling me home;
any new loves are unrequited.
