It Seems Only Yesterday

It seems only yesterday; my future was bright;
I had nearly all that I wanted;
I’d worked long hours; both day and night;
I was fearless; completely undaunted.

My wife and I had a business of our own;
to our customers; irreplaceable;
we’d even bought, my wife’s dream home;
our contracts; we thought; unbreakable.

Both of us were people of faith and trust;
against all odds; we’d succeeded;
vile opposition turned success into rust;
by corruption; we were defeated.

We had never really become very rich;
but we had always gotten by;
our business fit into a certain niche;
treachery forced it to die.

We lost everything in a very short time;
victims of corruption’s attack;
we felt like subjects of evil’s design;
lacking resources to fight back.

We felt abandoned by the God we served;
but we were the victims of pride;
our punishment seemed more than deserved;
when the love of my life, died.

It seems only yesterday; my future was bright;
now, all alone; I look to God, above;
I still work long hours; both day and night;
writing poems about God’s love.
