Winter’s Unrequited Love

Nine years ago; I lost the love of my life;
after nearly four decades together;
through bankruptcy; sorrows and strife;
we’d thought it’d last forever.

Since then, I’ve slowly faded into the past;
loneliness can drive one insane;
I’d never imagined how long sorrows last;
my presence; no longer germane.

Madeline, my darling, you believed in me;
you appreciated all I had written;
had I been a fraction as good as thee;
perhaps I could be forgiven.

You taught me; all things happen for a reason;
even though I had much doubt;
unfortunately; our love had a limited season;
it took your death, to find out.

Now you are gone; and I might as well be;
you were an angel; sent from above;
we may meet again; throughout eternity;
meanwhile I’m starved for love.

I’ve met another woman; with angel eyes;
her very presence, makes me excited;
I find her to be; both beautiful and wise;
but, my love for her is unrequited.

My heart is Springtime; my body; Winter;
in my presence; she’s never excited;
her youth has no love for me; within her;
such loves will always be unrequited.
