The Great Pretenders

Who are these people referred to as stars;
what makes them a step above;
they bask in luxury and own fancy cars;
often it’s themselves, they love.

Actors make their living by make believe;
like children; they play many a role;
many are more devious than we conceive;
do they possess a superior soul?

On screen or stage; they’re bigger than life;
when, in fact, we’re all children at play;
like all others; facing adversity and strife;
awakening to face a new day.

Many step forward as society’s defenders;
as tho a step above all the rest;
basking in spotlights; they’re great pretenders;
glory and fame is their quest.

Ordinary people tend to worship some star;
we see them as what we’d like to be;
most stars are illusions of glory from afar;
they are only pretenders; like me.

Each life is born with gifts and talents;
most covet those gifts of another;
peace and love hang in the balance;
we must live as sister and brother.

Everyone measures themselves with others;
only those wise, have the eyes to see;
all are God’s children; sisters and brothers;
we’re all great pretenders, to be.
