The First Stone
It seems that we always want to be first;
in almost everything we do;
perhaps we’re born with a competitive thirst;
and expect to always come through.
We pride ourselves in our decisions;
we prefer to be the first to decide;
decisions made; require no revisions;
even if our decisions divide.
No matter what; at the very same time;
we expect all others to agree;
all our decisions; we consider sublime;
almost, as tho, it’s our decree.
And yet, there can be a stigma attached;
if others, don’t follow suit;
we expect, that our choices, be matched;
if not; our choice is made moot.
A sinful woman was roughly thrown;
down at the Master’s feet;
tho her companion remained unknown;
her face mirrored her defeat.
The men, nearby; each picked up a stone;
planning to stone her to death;
the Master looked into her eyes, alone;
as the angry men took a breath.
The Master rendered an abrupt decision;
staring at each man; all alone;
conveying to them his perfect vision;
saying, “He without sin; throw the first stone.”
