The Cost
The Cost
It has been said that nothing is free;
that all things have a price attached.
I know it certainly seems so to me;
but how can goods and money interact?
How many sips of wine to pay for a coat;
or coats does it take for a car?
What does it cost to dig the king’s moat;
or build a castle fit for a czar?
Who determines the price for sheep;
or the barn that it takes to house them?
What is the price for the beds where we sleep;
or determines the cost to delouse them?
Why can we not take what we desire;
aren’t the best things in life, for free?
The feelings of love that others inspire;
change us to what we must be.
What energy serves to make one a pauper;
and the next, to be born as a king?
Just as a cup is to be held by a saucer;
there’s a place for everything.
But feelings are of a different rule;
each results in response of like kind;
when another treats you cruel;
your anger, to him, is inclined.
Love itself; was meant to remain;
and tho Love is said to be free;
once lost; it is hard to regain;
and it’s cost, can hurt for eternity.
