The By-And-By
In life we’ve coined many quaint phrases;
such as: shed no tears; don’t cry;
many, allude to life’s final phases;
like: we’ll meet in the by-and-by.
Such a phrase is not very specific;
hinting of a time; both dread;
alluding to thoughts that seem horrific;
a time when both of us are dead.
It’s a phrase hinting of a future time;
when friends and lost loves meet;
you might say; it’s a goodbye sublime;
or a hint of a love’s defeat.
It’s acknowledgement of reality’s vague plans;
and the lack of our own personal control;
perhaps it’s awareness of the Master’s demands;
the futures God planned for our soul.
Uttered to friends; now become strangers;
when we feel like there’s little to say;
those, who’ve shared sorrows and dangers;
politely sending them on their way.
It’s a polite way of closing a life chapter;
achieving the goal with clarity;
once; a friend; you’ve become a captor;
goodbye becomes insencerity.
Some day we’ll meet once again;
shed no tears; don’t cry;
as we were; when we’d began;
we’ll meet in the by-and-by.
