The Bully Within

Nearly everyone has utter contempt for a bully;
only a very few, will allow him to slide;
we’d like to pull him up, feet first, by a pulley:
such thoughts, leave us laughing, inside.

And, yet, each of us has our own bully, within;
seeking those weak, around us;
the fact that such thoughts, in us, begin;
really ought to astound us.

Anyone who acts as a bully, on the surface;
has his or her cowardice to hide;
we would do well to consider our purpose;
that, we too, are bullies inside.

When we bring others down; we lift ourselves up;
or, at least, that’s what we think;
we attempt to overwhelm; till they’ve had enough;
pushing our victims to the brink.

Verbally or physically we pummel our victims;
until we determine, they’ve had enough;
our pride demanded that all follow our dictums;
so, we bully; till they give up.

We see such behavior in others, around us;
but, are lacking in personal introspection;
often too aloof, for truth to confound us;
we’re afflicted with the same infection.

We’ve troubles enough; we don’t need a bully;
nor his surrogate, hiding within;
we only need God’s love to lift us up, fully;
for love is where all things begin.
