Self Deprecating Pride

We’ve heard and seen self deprecating humor;
it’s a subtle way of gaining attention;
perhaps, it’s our way of excising the tumor;
expecting others; our honor, to mention.

Unfortunately, within; we’ve something to hide;
and we want it to remain hidden;
deep within; our soul’s filled with pride;
a trait that’s most forbidden.

For, deeply inside us we feel we’re quite good;
tho we know that pride is a sin;
fearing, by others, we’ll be misunderstood;
we hold our true feelings within.

Pride is not the face we wear proudly;
we try to keep it concealed;
unforseen circumstance shouts it loudly;
whenever the truth’s revealed.

No matter how much we try to conceal;
pride has a purpose in truth;
confession is often unspoken and surreal;
exposed when we’re aloof.

And so, we seek our approval from others;
pretending to be undeserving;
professing self deprecation to sisters and brothers.
when actually, we’re selfserving.

The Master, who watches every sparrow fall;
also knows when we’ll succumb;
pride is the season when the soul must crawl;
only God knows who we’ll become.
