Selective Memories
Do our thoughts have a mind of their own;
is our conscience, indeed, our guide;
do we have thoughts; for which we atone;
where do our memories reside?
Who is in charge of what we remember;
who makes out our grocery list;
or recalls memories from last December;
why do the sad memories persist?
We think that we are in complete control;
of all things we say and do;
who determines thoughts of our soul;
tell me, dear one, is it you?
Memories flow; like the river of life;
endless and out of control;
melancholy memories cut like a knife;
yet; play an important role.
Some have the memory of an elephant;
select memories they never forget;
recalling what they consider most relevant;
forgetting the ones they regret.
Faith is much like that two edged sword;
making us remember bad and good;
our link, to God, brings guilt and reward;
once all truths become understood.
We live as though we answer to none;
but God is always in control;
we are always guided by the Holy One;
memories reside in the soul.
