Rest In Peace
During a funeral; it seems most ironic;
as though all tensions, it’ll release;
a statement, counterintuitive and iconic;
the minister declares, “Rest in peace!”
It seems foolish; as family members cry;
the casket, carried by somber faces;
not a member of the family, has a dry eye;
tho all depend upon God’s graces.
Many aren’t thinking of the dearly departed;
even while they’re drying each tear;
the past, dead; they’ve become hardhearted;
their own future death; they fear.
Faith of our fathers; has, instead, become hope;
many have lost all trust in tomorrow;
living only for today; they privately mope;
overcome with fears and sorrow.
Peace can never be achieved through hope;
hoping is much like wishing;
if death is viewed as climbing a steep slope;
one might, just as well go fishing.
Love and faith are the only answers to fear;
faith is the gift, freely given; by the Master;
when love is given; God’s love draws near;
it must be your love; not your pastor.
So love every neighbor, for it is your role;
trusting that God will draw near;
faith is the peace, welling up in your soul;
and peace can’t coexist with fear.
