Only Forgive
Forgiveness is the greatest act of love;
there’s nothing near to it’s equal;
embodiement of wisdom from above;
to allow each offender; a sequel.
How do we answer the words, “I’m sorry”?
Perhaps, you had best not ask me;
though wishing they’d commit hari-kari;
I’d reply, “Well, you ought to be!”
Often we answer with a nod and a smile;
fearful of the words we might use;
wishing they’d be eaten by a crocodile;
still, we have not a trace of excuse.
Only a few are very good at forgiving;
such a concept isn’t really understood;
some wish their enemies stopped living;
or hoped they’d find a new neighborhood.
Some people claim they forgive and forget;
but I see very little evidence of that;
often, instead, they forgive and regret;
maintaining claws as sharp as a cat.
It makes no matter; the severity of offense;
the level of anger is much the same;
the forgiver’s acceptance; a mere pretense;
they can’t turn loose of the blame.
Only through love can we rise above;
it’s love’s very last lesson we learn;
forgiving offenders is the ultimate love;
and by forgiving; his forgiveness we earn.
