My Best Foot Forward
My Best Foot Forward
Why is it; we hurt the ones we love most;
the ones we most want to protect?
Temptation is a vile and unyielding ghost;
that should always be suspect.
My life was a relentless search for truth;
righteousness was my goal;
temptations exposed me; with proof;
I was a deeply flawed soul.
I hungered and thirsted for righteousness;
but, pride got in my way;
drinking in the waters of loneliness;
living just day to day.
I’ve tried putting my best foot forward;
but things don’t always turn out;
trying my best to become straightforward;
my foot winds up in my mouth.
I’ve lived many lives; rolled into one;
my pride continues to last;
I keep returning to where I’d begun;
but my past just runs too fast.
No matter what; I just can’t get ahead;
my best foot forward; isn’t enough;
pride keeps me falling down, instead;
I keep finding the going, too tough.
Although it’s for righteousness, I thirst;
I often fail in its noble quest;
pride always exposes me at my worst;
especially to those I love best.
