Modern Colosseums

Life is a never ending parade of events;
one generation; following another;
every today follows the past precedents;
time only acts as a buffer.

We marvel, looking back on ancient Rome;
their barbarism displayed in museums;
we see the resemblance to our present home;
most teams have their own colosseums.

In Rome, many fought others to the death;
with only the emperor to intercede;
in the colosseum, many breathed a last breath;
all participants were expected to bleed.

Though the barbarism is more subtle, today;
the enthusiastic crowds enjoy every fight;
mankind lusts for competition in every way;
and winning makes everything right.

Everyone picks their own favorite teams;
often choosing brawlers and boozers;
they are most likely to live out our dreams;
only the fools cheer for the losers.

Though few ever die in today’s colosseums;
they become warriors of glory;
their statues and pictures adorn museums;
fame is their rest of the story.

Most all of their fans become forgotten;
their life was to see, and not do;
many, of whom, became downtrodden;
when their team died; they did too.
