Homely
Homely
What is it that makes someone homely;
was it done by the Father’s choice;
couldn’t He have made everyone comely;
was each person given a voice?
What is it that makes a person seem plain;
that others won’t take a second look?
It seems impossible for us to explain;
that homely is a picture of life’s book.
Could it be that the energy of the soul;
decides what its physical face is to be;
and, depending upon what is its role;
some faces fit you; and others, me?
Perhaps some, with a problem with pride;
select for themselves a humble facade;
and some, quite beautiful deep inside;
a face that looks struck by a cattle prod.
No matter who it is that makes the choice;
nothing ever happens without a reason;
whether it’s the Master, or the soul’s voice;
we play different characters every season.
For we all are but actors on life’s stage;
made up so that our character fits in;
it’s not how we look; but how we engage;
not if we’re too fat; or too thin.
Sometimes one’s beautiful, inside and out;
and beautiful heroes we’ll never regret;
but external beauty’s not what it’s about;
and God’s homely hero, we’ll never forget;
