Baby Steps
We begin life; learning how to walk;
starting out; we only could crawl;
crawling around we learned baby talk;
viewing our new world in awe.
In the beginning; we spoke words of our own;
for we were determined and quite contrary;
we quickly learned that our crib was our home;
while developing our very own vocabulary.
Speech developed; with our own special words;
expecting those, nearby, to understand;
we didn’t see a difference, from nouns to verbs;
but, we knew how to be in command.
Walking became a much different matter;
as we struggled, to stay on our feet;
we couldn’t begin to climb up a ladder;
it caused our face, and the floor. to meet.
Eventually, we all learned how to run;
since we all were born in life’s race;
competition divided us; when begun;
finishing second; became a disgrace.
As we grew old; no longer strong and trim;
we regressed to those baby steps years;
some, even were reduced to crawling again;
falling, among our greatest of fears.
Death allowed us to begin life, once more;
babies were not born; just to die;
death wasn’t meant a tomb; but a door;
in heaven, all angels can fly.
