A Paperboy's Promise

A Paperboy’s Promise

I remember a day, a lifetime ago;
when I was just a paperboy;
trudging through a foot of snow;
a cold wind; freezing my joy.

The snow was too deep, to ride a bike;
forcing me to walk, instead;
freezing, and tempted to go on strike;
two miles of snow lay ahead.

A young man, facing a struggle of life;
against all the elements of Winter;
an elementary course in earthly strife;
in character building; a beginner.

Deep in my soul: I wanted to give up;
I was freezing from head to toe;
it wasn’t too long; before I’d had enough;
yet, I had another mile to go.

I was just a boy; facing earthly resistance;
wanting nature to do me a favor;
my only weapon was stubborn persistence;
did people really need a newspaper?

I’d willingly accepted a responsibility;
whether it be great; or small;
failure would demonstrate my inability;
with my back against the wall.

Life’s small battles, are not just fillers;
they speak to who we’ll become;
in truth, they are the character builders;
through every small victory, won.

I vividly recall that day in the snow;
determination conquered my will;
all of these challenges make us grow;
promises are made; to fulfill.
