A First Impression
When young; I was taught a valuable lesson;
one which all of us should heed;
there’s nothing quite like a first impression;
for those who wish to succeed.
When you meet someone for the first time;
and your eyes; very first meet;
you form a permanent connection; sublime;
incapable of deceit.
The eyes take in much more than mere light;
and the ears; far more than sound;
our thoughts are the true arbiter of sight;
by their conclusions; we’re bound.
Every first meeting is a mental tug of war;
each person is under covert inspection;
searching for all defects; we most abhor;
while feigning our own perfection.
Tho it’s clear both participants are under duress;
and neither may be at their absolute best;
in spite of it all; it’s an established process;
and, very likely, both fail the test.
It’s always essential to just tell the truth;
no matter how much you are drawn;
history has a way of providing the proof;
and the mind finds out before dawn.
Never should you impress others with lies;
once, first met; the die has been cast;
pomposity is usually a terrible disguise;
the first, is the one that lasts!
